The Shy Girl’s Guide to Hostels

by SayHelloBlog, in category Tips, Travel

The Shy Girl's Guide to Hostels

First, if you are shy, then it’s a huge struggle to get out of your comfort zone to be around a lot of people you don’t know. Second, if you are an introvert (like me) you probably can be pretty comfortable keeping to yourself. So the fact you are even thinking of venturing out into the world of traveling and staying in hostels is amazing! Congratulations! You are about to do something extroidinary that will change your life forever!
I didn’t think too much before staying in my first hostel, alone. I was in my early 20’s and it just seemed like the thing to do if you wanted to travel on a budget. I was looking forward to the freedom staying in a hostel allowed me to have. I was excited to be alone in a country far from my own without anyone to help me, and that should have been terrifying, but it wasn’t.
In another country, as a foreigner you stick out, and not only do you stick out to the locals, but to other foreigners as well. You are part of an exclusive club of travelers, except in this club any traveler is welcome. Somehow being a foreigner amongst other travelers dulls your shyness and you easily strike up conversations with strangers. It’s easy because if you don’t ask them what they are doing there and how long they have been traveling, they will ask you. You have something in common with almost every person you meet in a hostel, you are wanting adventure, to see something new, to have out of the ordinary experiences.
I don’t know if it works for everyone like it’s worked for me, so these are just my opinions on how staying in hostels can change you.  If you want to get out of your shell, and get out of your comfort zone,  traveling and staying in a few hostels can give you a confidence you didn’t have before.   Here are my tips for staying in hostels if you are a shy introvert like me.

Use the common areas of the hostel.

UGH!  This was not fun for me at first.  I wanted to hide in my room and read or simply leave the hostel and find a pretty place and explore.  I was not interested in meeting people when I first stayed in hostels.  I do love people, and I do love meeting people, but sometimes the effort it takes for me to strike up conversations with new people is enough to keep me alone in my comfort zone.  You won’t be sorry though if you hang out for a bit in the common areas of the hostel.  Take a book, a computer, or journal, and practice relaxing and being around people.  It’s normal.  You won’t look out of place and someone might strike up a conversation with you so you don’t have to do any work.
The Shy Girl's Guide to Hostels

Make occasional eye contact.

Ok, I don’t mean it in a creepy way, don’t stare people down.  But don’t keep your head down the whole time either.  If you see someone in the room that looks like they might want to talk, just be open to it, and look open to it.  If you keep your head down in your book or journal the entire time you are in the common area, you won’t make any friends.

Bring a hat, iPod, and earphones.

One thing about hostels is they are friendly, and people want to meet you.  In case you are tired and needing that alone time to recharge, bring a hat and earphones, no one will bother you.  You won’t look like a loner (even if you do, who cares?).  Most people will just respect that you are taking some you time and leave it at that, or won’t notice you at all.  And this way you can hang out in one of the common areas or the your bunk, and not worry about anyone bothering you after a long day of site seeing. The Shy Girl's Guide to Hostels

Don’t stress if the first person you talk to doesn’t actually want to talk.

I stayed in one hostel for a week in Portugal.  I was fine site seeing alone but after a couple of days I really wanted to find one or two people to site see with.  I had tried striking up a conversation with a boy who was eating alone at breakfast and lunch on different days.  While he said hi and was interested in talking to me for a little bit, he also seemed very stand offish, and I felt awkward every time I tried to strike up a conversation with him. Come to find out he was traveling with three girls, and they hadn’t arrived at the hostel yet.  So I am guessing he didn’t want another girl hanging around, or he just really didn’t like me, haha.  I felt slightly rejected, but didn’t let it get to me.  One day I was eating breakfast alone and a girl from the Netherlands came over and sat by me.  We started talking, she had just arrived and wanted someone to site see with. Bingo!  We had a blast together, we did a whole day visiting castles and then the next day rode bicycles to the beach.  Her friend joined us on our bicycle ride and we all had a great time.

The Shy Girl's Guide to Hostels

Don’t be scared of public showers.

I can’t really think of anything to help a shy introvert with public showers.  I have never had to talk to anyone in a public shower, it’s kind of like a public restroom, most people just ignore each other.  Or maybe I just ignore most people and other people strike up conversations in the restroom?  But that seems so odd to me so surely they don’t.  I think it’s weird I am even talking about this.  I guess the only tip I have for you would be to bring flip flops, don’t shower without them.

Take advantage of any group tours or meals

There are new people arriving at the hostel every day.  It’s fun to see where everyone is coming from and traveling to.  Taking a group tour is a great way to naturally meet someone.  Sometimes the setting is all a shy introvert needs to come out of their shell.  When you are on a tour it’s easy to talk to someone you don’t know because you are both excited about going somewhere or doing something new.  Meals are a great way to meet people.  Try sitting at a main table and not always a table in the corner.  You don’t even have to talk to anyone if you don’t want to, though a friendly smile and a greeting goes a long way.  Also when you smile and look people in the eye it shows them you are confident (even if you are faking it).The Shy Girl's Guide to Hostels

Keep an eye out for another solo traveler or a group of two.

Large groups traveling together aren’t always the best groups to try to break into.  It’s not that they aren’t friendly, but they are there to spend time with each other.  They may talk to you but if you are wanting someone to site see with or to make a friend, large groups aren’t ideal for that.  I’ve found it easier to meet people when it’s just 1 or 2 people traveling together.  One time I was hiking in the Rain Forest in Costa Rica and ran into a couple girls traveling together.  We stopped to say hello and inquire where the other was from.  Turns out they were from Austin.  I was living in Dallas at the time.  We kept in contact and I even drove down to visit them in Austin when we all had returned to the States.  Pretty cool.

Be yourself and have fun!

At the end of the day, even if you don’t talk to many people, or if you talk to more people than you want, this is your trip!  Have fun, be confident in who you are!  You are a wonderful creation full of life, full of adventure, and you have a lot to offer the world!  People need to know you, don’t hide behind any excuses you’ve made in the past to close yourself off to the world.  Love yourself and do your best to love others, even if it puts you out of your comfort zone.  Enjoy your travels! The Shy Girl's Guide to Hostels

Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

by SayHelloBlog, in category Photography, Tips, Tips, Travel

Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

You don’t have to look like a tourist and take your camera everywhere with you if you want amazing travel photos. I absolutely love taking photos, and I would love it even more if my camera was tiny enough to fit in my pocket, but it’s not. While I enjoy taking photos with my iPhone (which does fit in my pocket), I consistently get better results with my big and bulky Canon 6D. Every trip I take I want to come back with some amazing photos to share. But if I only take photos with my iPhone, chances are I will still have some great photos, but they won’t all be exciting.

So in order to make it easier on myself and not feel like a tourist (well at least not the whole trip), I always set aside a time for taking photos while traveling. I might make it a whole day of taking photos, or I might just commit to an hour or two. I love my photo taking time and while traveling I look forward to it. I simply put my walking shoes on, grab my huge camera, and off we go! I make sure to cover a lot of ground and take as many photos as possible in that set amount of time. I do it while on vacation, while visiting friends in other cities, and while solo traveling.  That way, I don’t need to carry my camera around everywhere I go, and can leave it at the hotel the rest of the time.  I still use my iPhone for those moments I need a photo and didn’t bring my big but lovely camera.

Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

One thing I also invested in was a mirrorless camera. This camera is a lot smaller than my Canon 6D, but takes high quality photos as well. I haven’t used it on a trip yet but I am excited to see if this makes taking travel photos even easier. Even though I love my Olympus Pen and it’s amazingly sharp but compact lenses, I will still probably lug my Canon around, because it was my first love.

a little more about me

Here are a few tips to taking amazing travel photos:

Invest in a Quality Camera

Investing in a  good camera doesn’t mean you go out and spend tons of money.  You need to start somewhere.  While I would suggest looking into a mirrorless system like the Olympus system or the Fujifilm, those can get pricey.  A perfectly good place to start is a Canon Rebel.  I STILL get out my Canon Rebel TI and it takes great photos.  It is a smaller DSLR than my full frame camera and it does the job.  The first photo of the girl jumping of the cliff at the beginning of this post was taken with a Canon Rebel.  If you don’t like researching and don’t want to spend the time scouring the internet for the best camera for you, go to Wolf Camera, the salesmen I’ve talked to there have spent lots of time with me explaining to me the ins and outs of cameras and I never felt pushed to buy anything.  Plus they ask you what you are looking for in a camera and can point you in the right direction.  If you are on a budget, find out what camera you want and then go to Craigslist, you can find great deals on used cameras and lenses there.
Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

Shoot in Auto

At first, you can always just put your camera in auto.  I know most people will say you aren’t a real photographer if you can’t shoot in manual, but I say you are a real photographer if you have a camera and you use it!  There is nothing wrong with shooting in auto.  Your camera will do all the thinking for you and take the best photo it can using it’s inner calculating system.  Of course you do want to eventually get away from using the  auto program, your photos will improve by using manual.  You shouldn’t, however,  feel like you have to know all the technology before going out and getting some great photos!  Practice shooting in auto and practice getting photos at different angles.  You really can train your eye to see what makes a great image, just by going out and shooting!

 Know Your Equipment

This really comes down to practice.  You need to practice using your camera in order to know it better.  It’s great if you know how to turn it on, but even better if you know what modes to use.  Program mode is your auto mode, it chooses the shutter speed and the aperture for you.  Aperture mode sets the shutter speed and you choose the aperture.  Shutter mode allows you to only have to set the shutter mode.  Of course manual mode you choose both the shutter and the aperture.

Knowing how to use your camera will set you up for great photos.  If you’re ready to move on from Auto (Program) mode, try Aperture Priority.  Just practice using it and see what results you can get. Also knowing what lenses are available for your camera system can really improve your photos dramatically.  People spend a lot of time researching their camera then just stop and buy a horrible lens for it.  Research what lenses are good for your camera and invest in a quality lens.  Lenses are what most photographers live for!  I remember the first pro lens I bought, and it was worth every penny.

Find a good editing software.

I  use Photoshop and I love it.  You can easily brighten dull photos or sharpen photos that need it.  While photoshop is great, there are other editing softwares available if you need something more affordable.  If you are serious and photography isn’t a hobby, then invest in photoshop and lightroom from Adobe.com.  Don’t play around with cheaper editing software.  I did, and I wish I had just invested in photoshop from the beginning.  But if this is a hobby and you just need something affordable then using iPhoto to edit on your mac is great and the results are quite good.  If you don’t have a mac, and since I am unfamiliar with windows, here is a good article on finding other software to use.   If you just want to upload your photos to instagram then the VSCO app is wonderful.Below are too different photos, the first is fine, but it hasn’t been edited.  The second one the color really pops because of a little brightening I did in photoshop.  Just remember in editing, a little bit goes a long way.Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel PhotosSecrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

Train your eye to find amazing photos.

I spend lots of time at Barnes and Noble flipping through magazines.  I don’t always just pick up photography magazines, I pick up any magazine I am interested in (Domino, Real Simple, Travel and Leisure, Budget Travel etc).  Magazines have lovely photos.  If you are a magazine reader, chances are you already know what great photos look like,  you just need to be able to find your own.  Doubting yourself will keep you from being creative.  If you’ve been looking at magazines your whole life, you are already trained to see a great photo.  One magazine I love is National Geographic Kids.  The photos are beautiful.  I love how colorful they are!  I am inspired because the photos are inspiring.  It doesn’t hurt either that the photos are taken by professionals in travel photography.

Go find some magazines or get online and study some pictures.  Find some you like and then ask yourself why you like them.  Is it the angle the photo was taken at, the colors, what is interesting about them? Then go outside and take a walk.  Look around you for inspiring photos.  Is there a house that has pretty windows?  Is there a bicycle parked next to some flowers?  Is it a lazy afternoon and a kitty is outside sleeping on the porch? Inspiring photos are all around you, you just have to train your eye to find them.  Training your eye when you aren’t traveling will most certainly help you when you are.
Below is a photo of a lookout inside a castle.  I really only took it because I thought the flowers in the pots were pretty, but it’s turned out to be one of my favorite photos. I love how the light hits the tower in just the right places.
Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel PhotosI also love this one that I took in Panama of a boat on the beach.  I took the photo with a point and shoot camera,  proving you don’t have to have expensive equipment to take a good photo.
Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

Take your time to set up the photo.

Ok so you’ve trained your eye to look for good photo opportunities, but if you don’t take your time on setting up your photo you could get an almost amazing photo, and that’s not what you want.  Below are two pictures of the Eiffel Tower, if I had stopped with the first photo it would have been a clear miss.  I would have never shared it with you and you can see why.  Even though I could adjust it to straiten it out, it still is just an ok photo. The photo on the right however sparkles, not only is it strait, but also the glow of the Eiffel Tower hits the water just perfectly and lights up the whole photo.
Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

Get the right angle.

Once you are able to recognize a good photo opportunity, it sometimes takes a few photos before you get exactly what you want.  So take a few photos from different angles to see what you like.  I am not going to go into too much composing like some tutorials will do, there are rules to taking good photos, but honestly I just take several photos until I get what I want.  Sometimes a photo looks better up close and sometimes you need to back away from it to get the best angle.  Below are two photos of the same place.  I like the first one.  The composition in my opinion is better.  You can see more of the water, and the subject (the building) is centered in the middle of the photo.  In the second photo you really can’t see the water and there isn’t much composition going on.
Secrets to Taking Amazing Travel Photos

Join a photo group online, like Flickr.

Flickr.com has a great community of photographers.  There are thousands of groups to choose from and entire groups devoted to travel photography.  You can sign up and then share your photos online.  You can study others photos and comment and other people can comment on your photos.  This is also a great community to go to for tips and tricks on all things photography.  When I bought my Olympus Pen I joined a photography group dedicated to the Olympus Pen.  I am then able to see what kind of photos other people are capturing with their Olympus system.  If I am getting bad results with my Pen and someone is getting good results, then I know it’s not the camera, it’s me.  Maybe there is something I can do differently to get better results. Plus it’s just a great way to learn from fellow photographers.

To Sum it all up:

To take amazing travel photos you need a decent camera and practice. Study great travel photos, practice looking for photo opportunities, and on your next trip set aside time to go out and look for inspiring photos. Practice shooting in auto, then try Aperture Priority mode and eventually work your way to manual.  Don’t take pictures of just anything, look around you for something inspiring.  Chances are if you feel inspired by something and capture it with your camera, others will love it as well.  Take your time to set up the photo. Find an interesting angle. Make sure to crop or brighten the photos in an editing software, this can make a huge difference in the end result of your photo. Join a photography group online! You will continue to learn! Lastly don’t be too hard on yourself, especially if you are learning.  Give yourself time and keep at it.  Have any other travel photography tips or secrets you’ve learned?  I would love to hear them!

Talk to you soon,

Ronda

Orange Pineapple Carrot Juice

Orange Pineapple Carrot Juice

Need an immune booster with loads of vitamin C?  Try this yummy Orange Pineapple Carrot Juice.  It’s tasty and nutritious.  I like having it with breakfast.  It adds a bit of sweetness to my morning.  Pineapple and orange juice are both packed with vitamin c plus Pineapple juice is loaded with B vitamins. Carrots are beneficial in boosting your immune system plus they are rich in biotin and other vitamins.

If you are new to juicing, really you can just choose three of your favorite fruits and veggies, throw them in a juicer and you basically have a vitamin drink.  Let’s just call juicing what it is, you are getting your vitamins in a delicious and fresh way.  I grew up in a family that takes supplements for everything.  We didn’t go to the doctor much, we just bought more supplements (while of course trying to eat healthy).

Orange Pineapple Carrot Juice

The greatest thing about juicing is, if you are consistent enough you will stay happy and healthy, and the less supplements you have to take. Cause ain’t nobody got time for supplements! I hope you enjoy the recipe.

Adding Colors to a Rainbow: Experiencing Another Culture

by SayHelloBlog, in category Central America, Travel

Adding Colors to a Rainbow: Experiencing Another Culture

My first experience traveling outside the country was when I moved to Costa Rica to study Spanish.  After about a week I remember sitting in the tiny room my host family provided for me, and writing in my journal.  I was so overwhelmed by the hospitality of the people, the beautiful language I was learning, and the different way of thinking than my own, which was evident in the way people moved about and acted.  I wrote down that “learning another culture is like adding colors to a rainbow, colors that you didn’t know existed.”

Adding Colors to a Rainbow: Experiencing Another Culture

Since then I have traveled to Central America every summer and I keep learning more about the people.  Since that first trip to Costa Rica I have taught in the States for 8 years and now I am thinking of moving to Central America to experience living there again.  It never ceases to amaze me the things you learn by traveling.  I feel like I add more colors to my rainbow every time I experience a new country or new culture.  The lovely people in Paris, with their whimsical way of speaking enthralls me.  The quiet and laid back life of a small town in Belgium encouraged me to chase the dream of living in a more peaceful and slow paced life than I have had in the past.
Adding Colors to a Rainbow: Experiencing Another Culture
Every time I think of traveling, not only do I think of beautiful places to see, and amazing food to try, I think of the people.  Yes traveling is incredible, it’s adventurous and freeing.  But travel would be empty without the culture and the people that create those wonderful, exotic, and absolutely stunning experiences.  People are the reason travel is exciting.  Without them, it’s just wandering through an empty but beautiful house.  And though that huge house may be beautiful and you can enjoy it for a time, without anyone to live in it, it’s meaningless and holds little value.  I will always enjoy traveling, but I will also be thankful to the different types of people and cultures that make it worth doing.

The Best Piña Colada Smoothie You Will Ever Make

by SayHelloBlog, in category Juice and Smoothies

Best Pina Colada Smoothie

There is nothing like a special smoothie recipe to make your morning a little brighter.  I love Piña Colada smoothies, coconut has always been one of my favorite flavors.  Recently I started adding just a little bit of coconut oil to my morning Piña Colada.  Not only is it creamier,  it’s healthier.  I’ve been doing a bit of reading on how good coconut oil is for you and how you can use it for pretty much anything.  It makes me think of that scene in “The Help”  when Minny explains to Celia about the many amazing wonders of Crisco.  I feel like Coconut oil is the modern day Crisco.  Have dry skin?  Use coconut oil.  Have tooth decay?  Coconut oil.  Need a hair mask or make up remover?  Coconut oil.  But not only can you use coconut oil for beauty, it’s for eating as well!  Coconut oil has healthy fats and can boost your metabolism.  If you are interested in reading up on the benefits here is a great article by Wellness Mama on coconut oil benefits.

Why You Shouldn’t Quit Your Job to Travel

by SayHelloBlog, in category Heart to Heart, Tips, Travel

Why You Shouldn't Quit Your Job to Travel

Why Traveling IS for Everyone

Let me first say that traveling is most definitely for anyone who wants adventure and loves to see new places.  Traveling builds confidence and is one of the best teachers for learning about the world. Anyone who can afford to travel, should at least take one trip or two trips a year, it’s wonderful and educational.  Of course if you have a dream of quitting your job to travel, you really should. I say just go for it.  If you want to know why it might not be such a good idea to quit your job and travel full time or move to another country, well then read on.

To Travel You Must Make a Decision to Leave Home and Giving Up Home is Not for Everyone

When you quit your job to commit to travel sometimes you must give up the comforts of a steady income and/or family.   This seems to be the hardest thing for me.  I’ve been looking at a lot of travel blogs lately, and somehow instead of being inspired, I feel overwhelmed.  I feel overwhelmed because I have probably taken reading travel articles to an unhealthy level.  Ha.  So after all that reading I started wondering today, why do I even want to travel?  People have already gone places, I can look at photos, I can stay home and be comfortable.

Home, that word. It’s a word most people feel lost without.  Home denotes going to a coffee shop and knowing the people, because you’ve been there every day for years.  It signifies relationships and family.  It also alludes to babysitting your nieces and nephews, walking a familiar path around your neighborhood, running into friends at a grocery store.

Why I Gave Up Home to Travel

My problem with this word is even sometimes with it I feel lost, and maybe that’s simply because I don’t feel at home yet.  I don’t feel settled.  I’ve felt somewhat misplaced since college.  It could have something to do with trying to settle and then having my heart broken.  Having your heart broken does things to you, you either wallow in self pity and become depressed for a time, or you move.  My heart is perfectly fine now, but it is also restless and it longs to travel.

There were only a few years since college (I graduated 13 years ago) that I felt at home in one place.  I had a tiny house with a huge backyard.  I spent three years in my first house.  I remember when I moved out of that house.  I cried, and even a year later when I went back to visit my former neighbors I cried just driving down the street that I had considered “home”.  But those years are now years ago and for the past couple of years, no place feels like home.

Why You Shouldn't Quit Your Job to Travel

Why I Quit My Job to Travel

Something else is out there.  I can feel it and I want to chase it.  So you say to me, “you don’t sound happy or content.”  The truth is I am the happiest I have been in a long time and I am perfectly content to sit the rest of my life in my parents’ house typing away at this blog (or finding some other worthy hobby or job),  if I felt that was what I was supposed to do.  What I want to chase is the adventure God has put in my heart.  I want to know it, I want to taste it and I want to run after it till I’ve caught it.

There is something delicious about stepping out into the unknown and breathing in unfamiliar air.  There is an electricity that you wonder if those around you feel, or if it’s just you.  Everything is wonderfully different than your home.  A new people, a new culture, possibly a new language, and most definitely a new way of thinking is what keeps me coming back to traveling every time.

Why You Shouldn't Quit Your Job to Travel
Travel is not for everyone and/or moving to another country is not for everyone.  There is a lot you give up when you are constantly moving and never staying in one place.  I wonder though, if people because they get comfortable, settle before it’s time.  Like there was an adventure waiting just around the corner of the street, but they stopped too soon.

It’s ok to want a home, it’s actually right.  Everyone needs community, and it’s important to be plugged into relationships.  Relationships are what will carry you through life.  But sometimes, you might be called to something else.  I think it’s ok to travel.  I can’t say traveling should last forever and ever, but for some people, they are made to do it.

Even so, I still don’t think traveling full time is for everyone.  It’s not always fun, it’s not easy, planes are the worst, sometimes getting there takes forever, sometimes your luggage gets lost, being away from family is lonely, and honestly it can be stressful.  But it gets inside of you, going to a land you’ve never been to before and seeing a way of life you aren’t used to.

You can have the best of both worlds. If you still want to travel while having an amazing career (and a home) read “How to be a Teacher and Travel the World“.

What Travel Means to Me

Where was I going with this?  Travel means more to me right now than a lot of things.  It’s hope, it’s bright, it holds the promise of finding that four letter word that’s so dear to many people.  It may even lead me back to where I started.  Until it does, I might not know that where I started is where I needed to end up, if that’s the case.  But if it’s not then home is where I am traveling to, and I am closer to it because I am moving towards it.

If you’ve already found home and if you are settled, then know this: you are where you are supposed to be and no amount of traveling or looking will make you happier (though it might be fun).  It’s ok not to travel, it’s ok not to see other places, because home is so much more important than any of those things.  On the other hand, if you aren’t settled, then maybe home is not too far off, you just might have to travel to get there.
