In Love with Les Duex Moulins, the Cafe from Amelie

by SayHelloBlog, in category Europe, Travel

A Day in Montmartre and the Cafe from Amelie

I love foreign films.  I do.  There is something very real and magical about a film not made by Hollywood.  I have an obsession with French too.  I’ve been practicing 30 minutes a day with Duolingo, and though I can only usually remember one phrase “the woman eats the apple” I have high hopes that one day, I will be fluent, even if it takes me 50 years.

Because I am obsessed with French I’ve started looking up movies in French.  I had seen Amelie a long time ago, but before going to Paris, I had to watch it again, mainly for the French.  Even with it being in French, Amelie, I am sorry to say, is not my favorite movie.  I found it a little depressing.  But the truth is, it’s also a magical movie, much due to the cinematography and the beautiful French language.  Again, I know this movie is a favorite of many,  and even though I didn’t love the story, there are things I love about the movie.

Les Duex Moulins: One of the Best Cafes in Paris for Lunch

One of the things I LOVED about the movie was the little cafe Les Duex Moulins.   So when I went to Paris this was one thing on my list to do!   I hope it’s on everyone’s list.  It wasn’t just an amazing little cafe with tons of character, the food was so good!  It’s here I discovered just how delicious French cheese really is.  I have never been a fan of Blue Cheese in the States.  I think it’s disgusting.  The Salad with Blue Cheese that I had at Les Duex Moulins, was incredible!  It was rich, smooth, and tangy.  If they had brought me a block of this cheese, I would have been just as happy, I am sure I could have eaten an entire block of it.  It had a slight bitter taste but was not overwhelming.  I dream about this cheese sometimes.  I am not joking.  I still hate American Blue Cheese.  I could probably write an entire post on French Blue Cheese, maybe I will one day.  It’s the cheese of my dreams!

A Day in Montmartre and the Cafe from Amelie

The cafe was exactly what I thought it would be.  It’s fun to visit a place you’ve seen in the movies.  But sometimes when you visit a place you’ve seen in pictures or the movies before, you can be underwhelmed.  You build it up in your head only to be let down later. I am going to try and explain what made this cafe so different and special (besides the cheese, oh man, which again was worth the whole visit by itself).  It might have been the buzz of excited customers, the delicious food, and knowing you were sitting on the set of an iconic movie.  I was not disappointed.

A Day in Montmartre and the Cafe from Amelie

I did not, however, feel that excited when I saw the Moulin Rouge for the first time.

In my head I had definitely built up the famous French cabaret.   From the outside it just seemed like a small circus building.  I was underwhelmed, probably because it was a lot smaller than I had imagined.  The picture I had in mind before seeing it was this great building that sparkled and drew attention, and after seeing it I had no desire to even stay and ooh and ahh over it.   But I did grab a picture.

A Day in Montmartre and the Cafe from Amelie

Back to the little French Cafe from Amelie, where I fell in love with Blue Cheese and felt like I might see Amelie walk down the street at any moment.  It’s possible that I did not just fall in love with the cheese, but the cafe itself.  If I lived in Paris I would frequent Les Duex Moulins weekly, in a word, it was whimsical.  From the delicious food to the funky bar.  The bathroom even had memorabilia from the movie.  Best money I spent on lunch all 3 weeks I was in Paris!

A Day in Montmartre and the Cafe from Amelie

I am sure there are other cafes that surpass this little gem.  But if you find yourself in Paris I think it’s a must!  Just FYI, I believe they change the menu daily.  But my French is pretty non existent, so I am not 100% sure if they do, because I couldn’t ask.  I did go back a different day for that salad, and they either had run out, or weren’t serving it.  Everything else I tried there was delicious.  I don’t think you should take my word though, I think you should just go there and try it yourself.

God Is Not Mad at You

by SayHelloBlog, in category Heart to Heart

God is Not Mad at You

I was close to dreaming last night when a thought woke me up “God doesn’t need me, he wants me.”  I don’t know why I had this thought, I was so sleepy, and then the thought came, and from there you know how thoughts go.  I had to deepen the thought, I needed to think more about why God doesn’t need me, was that even a truth?  So then my thoughts took control and I was further away from sleep than I wanted.

God doesn’t need me.  He doesn’t.  I can’t do anything for Him.  He created me, he created the world, he didn’t need me to create the world, He made it all by Himself.  Yep, I didn’t help Him.  So He doesn’t need me to do anything to keep this world going, He’s got things under control.  He does, however, want me.  He wants me to be a part of this world, and He has things He wants me to do, but He does not need me to do them.  The things He wants me to do are for my benefit or the benefit of others, but not His.  He wants me, He does not need me. Want and need are two different things.  I am not going to explain them, I expect most people understand the difference between the two.

We seem to think God needs us, so we feel guilty when we don’t do the right thing.  He needs us, so when we mess up, He must be mad at us.  How many times has someone been mad at us because we messed up at work, or at home, and someone had to do our work, or fix what we broke?  So we think God has to do extra work or something when we aren’t doing our job.  We feel like we’ve messed up the world when we do the wrong thing.  The truth is the world is already messed up.  When we do the wrong thing we mess ourselves up.  When we do the right thing, we make ourselves better, and others benefit from our doing the right thing.   God is ok whether we do the wrong or right thing, but when we mess up, we are not ok, and those around us are not ok.  We might get mad at ourselves but God isn’t mad at us.

God isn’t angry with you.  In the Bible you read about judgement and you read about God’s wrath, but let me say it again, God isn’t mad at you.

Let’s imagine there is a little kid who wants to play with a dog down the street.  His mom has told him not to play with this dog, several times.  The mom knows the dog is bigger than her child, she knows it’s not a “gentle” breed, but a guard dog.  Guard dogs aren’t bad, they have a purpose.   Would the child be “sinning” if all he wanted to do was pet the dog?  Um…no. It’s not a sin to pet a guard dog, maybe not the smartest thing to do, but not a sin. But the child doesn’t know this, he thinks Mom is being unfair and thinks he can take care of himself.  One day the child walks over to the fence and sticks his hand inside to pet the dog.  The dog nearly bites the child’s hand off.  There is blood every where.  All of a sudden things just got messy.  Sin is like that…it doesn’t seem bad, but all sin really is is disobedience.  Sin sounds like such an ugly word, the word “disobedience’ is more relatable.  But they are one and the same thing.

Back to the child.  Does the child go back home and yell at his mom?  Does the child think the mom is mad at him and has punished him?  After all the mom warned him not to go and play with this dog.  Can we blame the dog? Nope, the dog was doing his job. What about the child?  The child just wanted to play with the dog, it doesn’t make the child bad. Can we blame the mom?  Where was she? Why didn’t she stop the child?   She could have kept him inside all day, locked up in his room so he wouldn’t hurt himself…but that doesn’t seem very nice.  After all if she did that, the child’s freedom would be at stake.  The child did disobey his mom, which led to him almost losing his hand.

The child will not go home and yell at his mom.  BUT he will go home crying and his mom will rush to him, she will take care of him, shushing him, talking sweetly to him, she will pick him up and rush him to the hospital if need be.  Will she be so mad at him that she turns him away?  What mother would do that?  What human being would be so mad at their child for disobeying them they would let them bleed to death?  News flash! God doesn’t turn away from you for disobeying him.  It’s not in His DNA, He is more than a superhuman, He can handle disobedience, it’s us humans that can’t handle it.

What would happen to the child if he did not go home to his mom after being bit?  Would he bleed to death, depending on the size of the wound?  Would the hand get infected? What would happen to him if he thought his mom was mad, and he decided never to go and talk to her again? What if he decided his disobedience was too great for his mom to handle?  What if your disobedience has kept you from going to God? What if you are afraid of God?  But what if God just really cares about you and wants to love and protect you?

God isn’t going to turn you away for disobeying him, he is going to send his angels to you, He is going to speak words of love over you till you hear Him, He is not going to give up on you.  He wrote an entire book for you.  He whispers words of love through the trees, which float on the wind all around you.  You don’t need human ears to hear him, you need a mind that is awake to Him.  If He only spoke in an audible voice how would deaf people hear him? He doesn’t need a physical voice to communicate with you. He communicates with you every day, He hasn’t skipped any days, you may have stopped listening, but He hasn’t stopped talking.  He shares his thoughts with you, you just have to share your thoughts with him, it’s called prayer.

God isn’t mad at you.  I don’t know you, I don’t know what you’ve done or what you think is so bad beyond help, but you are not gone.  God doesn’t need you so he isn’t mad at you.  He does love you, and He does want you.  Whatever you’ve done has hurt you (or maybe something someone else has done has hurt you).  If you never bring yourself to God and let him take care of you, you will go on hurting, you will go on bleeding, and you might never be fixed.  It’s ok to be broken, it’s ok to have messed up.  It’s ok.  God wants to fix you, but you have to bring yourself to him, and you have to allow the healing to happen.  You are not ok by yourself.  You are not ok without Him.  He is ok, you are not.

It doesn’t come easy to me to think that God doesn’t need me.  But if God needed me then the world would surely be in trouble, because I am pretty imperfect, I am unstable, I worry a lot, I am selfish, I am anxious, and I am scared most of the time.  It’s a good thing God doesn’t need me.  But I love Him,  and He loves me and if He calls me to do something I want to do it, not because He needs me to do it, but because He loves me.

If you still are trying to reason that God does need you, so He must be mad at you for not doing the right thing, think about this.  A person has fallen from a cliff, and is barely hanging on.  A rope is thrown to this person.  Does the person need the rope?  Or does the rope need the person?  Obviously, that’s a silly question.  But it’s so ingrained in us for some reason that God needs us and therefore He is angry when we mess up.  I’ve been a Christian my whole life and I still struggle with this.  God doesn’t need you to throw him a rope, you wouldn’t be strong enough to pull him up anyway.   You need Him, you so desperately need Him.

It’s not easy, but the first thing you can do is just open your mind to Him, just your thoughts.  You don’t have to say anything, just let Him know you are open to Him.  Ask Him to show you how to communicate with Him, ask Him for help.  God’s anger was nailed to a cross, His son Jesus died in our place.  There is no wrath or anger for those that believe in Him.    I promise He won’t turn you away.  I promise He will be there for you, and I promise your life will start to change.  God loves you, He isn’t mad at you.

Photoshop Actions are Great for the Beginner and the Photoshop Enthusiast

One of my favorite things to do is to use photoshop to create vintage filters for my photos.  I spend hours playing in photoshop to create filters and photoshop actions.  If you are a beginner photoshop enthusiast or love having a toolbox full of photoshop actions these actions are for you!

Free Photoshop Actions

Why I Love Using Photoshop Actions

I love photoshop actions, if you haven’t already figured that out. Using photoshop actions makes every day editing a little bit simpler.  If I need to brighten a photo, for example, I use an action called Brighten that I created by recording what I do to brighten a photo. Then later when I want to brighten a photo, instead of opening up the brighten tool and manually brightening the photo, I just click on actions, then click Brighten.  Photoshop actions are basically a one click for editing.  They make editing life quick and easy.

How to be a Teacher and Travel the World

by SayHelloBlog, in category Tips, Travel

There was never a point growing up when I thought to myself “I want to be a teacher”.  I didn’t even enjoy playing “school” when my other friends wanted to pretend we were in class and pick a teacher.  You know those games we played as kids?  We would line up a bunch of stuffed animals in chairs and two or three of us would  be the teacher by walking around with a clipboard and pencil, pretending to catch a couple of teddy bears swapping notes.  It wasn’t my favorite game.  I loved playing business, I wanted to be a doctor or an inventor.   Being a teacher was not at the top of my list.

How to be a Teacher and Travel the World
You can’t be a teacher and not have a love for children.

I graduated with a degree in Psychology with plans to be a Therapist.  That was the plan.  I also had a deep desire to learn Spanish, and right after being accepted to a masters program for counseling, I threw caution to the wind and decided to travel instead.  Because I am great at making plans and then changing them. After a year of language school I came back to Texas and needed to work.  I happen to love kids and when I heard about the shortage of Bilingual teachers, I decided to apply for a teaching internship.

Why a Career as a Teacher is Great for Single People Who Want to Travel

The great thing about teaching is, if you love kids, and have a degree, you can get a Teaching Certificate while working and being paid as a teacher.  It is quite a lot of work for one year, the internship involves working weekends, and you find yourself getting to work before the sun comes up and getting home after dark.  If you can make it through the year then you have a couple months of recovery, and for the more adventurous, two months of travel!

Although I no longer teach, I would recommend the job to anyone with a heart for kids and a longing for wanderlust.  Teaching allows you to invest in the lives of your students, be active in a community, but also escape every summer to whichever place your heart desires.

Teaching is a great career, but you still have to save in order to travel.

If you are really frugal throughout the year and save a few hundred a month you will have some amazing summer experiences traveling.  I spent many summers in Central America learning to surf, practicing my Spanish, meeting other travelers, hiking volcanoes, and having a blast.  I won’t lie and tell you the life of a teacher is easy, it’s not.  You wake up early, you long for the weekend, and when the weekend comes you dread Monday, especially that first year.  Though it isn’t a perfect job, and there are always hard parts to it, it does get easier after that first year.

Tips for saving money

  • Live with a roommate
  • Make coffee at home
  • Cook meals and limit eating out to weekends
  • Get a Savings account (and use it)

I was able to save up money every summer to travel, sometimes I even took trips over the holidays. I spent a Spring Break in Spain and a Christmas in Costa Rica.  If you make travel a priority in your spending during the year, you can easily have money to travel.  You will also have money to go out on the weekends during the year.

Teaching May Not Be For You If…

If you dislike kids, I would encourage you to choose a different career.  It isn’t worth your whole year to be miserable (and to make the students miserable) just so you can travel in the summer.  The summer goes by fast and the work year is long.  You have early mornings and long days with 30 minutes for lunch (which most of that lunch is spent in the copy room eating your sandwich standing up). You have to stay late most days.  All that work isn’t worth it if you don’t enjoy the time with the students.

If you love kids then teaching is a perfect fit for you already, because it’s all about the kids.  If you’ve dreamed of having a job that allows you to travel, I can guarantee you that teaching is the best of both worlds.  It’s a very rewarding career, in so many ways. But if your heart is in traveling or even volunteering in other countries in the summer, teaching could be a good fit for you.

I hope you found this post helpful!  If you have any questions for me about teaching or what its like to save during the year and travel in the summers, ask away!  I am here to help!

Talk to you soon!

What You Can Learn from a Travel Blogging Conference

by SayHelloBlog, in category Blog Life

What You Can Learn at a Travel Blogging Conference

This year I’ve become serious about blogging, travel blogging to be exact. Not only do I get lost in Pinterest looking at other travel blog articles, I am constantly writing ideas for my own posts.  Travel blogging fits me, I have never desired a life where I stay in one place too long. In fact I don’t think I am capable of staying in one place at all. I recently finished 5 years teaching in Dallas, Tx. Every year I taught I thought it would be my last, because I was going to travel the world. I’ve had places like Thailand, South Korea, Australia and Spain on my list for forever. I did manage to make it to Spain, but still haven’t visited Thailand or the others.

Back to the point of this post. I don’t think blogging will be the vehicle in which I have money to travel, the reason being, starting a blog does not mean you get paid. It means you have an outlet to express yourself and share your experiences with others, and you have the potential to make money. The truth is, other people are making money at blogging. When I realized this I thought I should go find these people and figure out how they are doing it! So a little over a month ago I did some research and found two blog conferences, one called Thrive in Houston Tx (which was amazing), and one called Women in Travel by She’s Wanderful (which I will be writing about today).

What You Can Learn at a Travel Blogging Conference

Now both conferences were great and I learned a ton and was overwhelmed with information. But WITS in Irvine California definitely went above and beyond my expectations.

I actually was a little anxious before coming to WITS. It was a big investment for one long weekend in California. I struggled with questions about the money I would be investing and what I would be learning. Would it be worth it?

I can say with confidence WITS is the best thing to happen to me this year. I am a little shy and a little introverted, but being around so many amazing real women who travel, has given me confidence. Hearing strong women leaders who are changing the way people see the world through travel and by sharing their experiences has opened me up to a wonderful new world. I know better who I am now, I feel loved, I feel accepted, and I am changed. I am motivated to go out and put into practice everything I learned.

Yes, I realize that just sounds all nice and fuzzy. But I did actually walk away with a wealth of knowledge as well as feeling great about myself. The feeling great about myself was the icing on the cake!  Speaking of cake!  Did you know all the extras you get at a conference?  I didn’t.  There was food, free drinks, parties, a nail bar airstream trailer (I kid not),  free tours around Irvine (YES!),  not to mention amazing sponsors and vendors to meet!

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
What You Can Learn at a Travel Blogging Conference

It felt like Summer Camp, but without the bugs, the bullies, and counselors telling you when to go to sleep.  It was more like a luxury summer camp with free food and drinks.  Ok, but I also learned something too.  Remember that small investment I was worried about in the beginning? Worth every penny.

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA

OLYMPUS DIGITAL CAMERA
So now on to what I learned.  I now have knowledge on how to make money blogging,  how to write and create better blog posts, and how to work with sponsors.  I know about opportunities I can seek out for Travel Writing gigs. I learned where to get a press card and why I need one.  I learned why I need a niche.  I learned tips on  creating professional videos (yes I did!).  The sessions were incredible, and there were two days of sessions! Though I was disappointed that I couldn’t attend all the sessions, because many were at the same time as other sessions, I will be getting access to the videos of the whole conference. So my learning hasn’t ended!

Here are just a few more things I learned.   From Nicolle Merril’s session Networking without Pants, I learned that opportunities can open up by just having a conversation with someone. Simple right? But I hadn’t thought of this. She walked us through some ways to make conversations easier, this might have been boring for some extroverts who are very comfortable meeting people, but for me it was invaluable. Who knew I could be good at starting conversations?

What You Can Learn from a Travel Blogging Conference

The second is from Brooke Roberts, I am not a blogger, I am an entrepreneur, I am the CEO of my company. Facebook and Instragram do not own my blog, I do. Facebook and Instagram can become obsolete like Myspace, but email stays forever. I need to build an email list and I need to create something that other people will find valuable and want to invest in. I also learned about what to put in a newsletter and different ways to get people to sign up for my newsletter (like an email series) Lastly, I now know my niche, I know who my target audience is, and I know how to focus my blog to reach them.  Ever heard of Misadventures with Andi? In her session everything I needed to do to focus my blog for my audience just kind of clicked.  Amazing.

OH! And I got to meet Hey Nadine! Crazy right? I was inspired by her amazing video. I confess I didn’t know who she was before the conference. But I am glad I have tons of her videos to catch up on. She was the keynote speaker, and I really think her message was powerful. The world needs people who are traveling to show that there is more to the world than the bad and the ugly. We need to show what a beautiful place the world can be. Traveling has definitely changed my life, but WITS has given me the tools to show others how traveling can change their lives, and that is powerful. I am truly grateful for the whole experience and I can’t wait to come back next year!

What You Can Learn at a Travel Blogging Conference

If you did not get the chance to go and you would like access to some crazy good information from traveling and blogging to video and networking, you can still get access to the videos! To my knowledge they are not available yet, but hopefully they will be soon! But really, you should come next year! Especially if you are trying to make a living at blogging and traveling!

Happy blogging my friends!

How to Create Amazing Travel Photo Stories

by SayHelloBlog, in category Photography, Tips

Feeling creative? Use your travel photos to create a photo story!

How to Create Amazing Travel Story Photos

Photography is more than just a great activity to do when you feel creative, or when you want to be outside, or when you are just bored.  Travel Photography is a way to tell a story.  What’s so unique about it is the photographer is unlimited in the way he or she can create and share their view of the world.  Before going out and taking photos, think about what type of story you want to tell, think about the big pictures you might take, or the small details.  When you put them together you can create a unique and beautiful photo story!

The great thing about traveling and being a photographer is you can decide on what you want to tell about your adventures.  You can share a few details or you can share the big picture, or you can share both!  I love using photos to tell a story.  The stories I like to share the most are bright, happy, and fun.  When you create a story with your photos, you will be able to tell what the story is about by just looking at the photos. When you choose photos to go in a story, there should be something that ties them together, like a theme or a color scheme.

Here is an example of the story of a beach trip I took by myself.  I would say the photos speak of a summer afternoon and show escaping the busy life and enjoying the reality of doing nothing for awhile.

How to Create Amazing Travel Photo Stories

By adding another travel photo to my story I create a little bit more activity, but not much.  Walking under a palm tree, then relaxing by the sea tells a slightly different story then just escaping.

How to Create Amazing Travel Photo Stories

When you are traveling it’s easy to forget to take photos of the details.  You may get so caught up in the scenery, the landscape, and the architecture, that you forget to take pictures of the small details that make up your story.  Well, I am mostly saying this because I forget!  I am so wrapped up in big moments that I forget about those small details, and you’d think I wouldn’t, I mean, I like to think of myself as observant.  You can always crop a photo later to have a spotlight on something small, but it saves a lot of time and effort if you get the photos right from the beginning. Here is another travel photo story for you and again without any small details.  (Note to self, get better at taking small detail photos.)

How to Create Amazing Travel Story Photos

This story could be called “a walk around town” or something.  I wish it included food from Four Daughters’ Kitchen, but I didn’t have time to stop and eat.  Maybe next time!

Use Canva to create your photo stories from your travel photos.

To create unique and beautiful photo stories I use Photoshop and Canva.  I use Photoshop mostly but I love Canva. If you have never used Canva before it’s free and easy to use.  If you go to the frame section on Canva you can easily upload your own photos.

How to Create Amazing Travel Story Photos

Then just choose the frame you want and once your photos have uploaded you can drag them to the frame.

Then just choose the frame you want and once your photos have uploaded you can drag them to the frame.

Creating your travel story with photos is so much fun!  I will be doing more of them and sharing with you hopefully more often!  These travel photography stories were from my trip to California last weekend at Manhattan Beach.  I stopped at the closest beach to the LAX airport.  Of course really anywhere you drive up and down the Pacific 1 highway there are pretty beaches.  Manhattan Beach is a 15 minute drive from LAX, so if you have some extra time before your flight you should stop there.  It’s gorgeous and very peaceful.  It’s a great beach to avoid a more crowded beach like Huntington, and there were quite a few local places to eat, and cute boutiques. I wish I had had more time there.

This last Photo Story is from Cystal Cove beach near Newport.  It was a beautiful day as you can tell.  I was not alone, I had my wonderful friend Hepcat Hannah with me!

Have fun creating your own travel story photography!

Let’s Juice! Fresh Strawberry Lemonade Recipe

by SayHelloBlog, in category Food, Juice and Smoothies

Let's Juice! Strawberry Lemonade

I’ll be honest about my juice recipes.  Sometimes I come up with a recipe based on what I have in the kitchen.  I don’t plan, I don’t always go out and buy fresh ingredients.  I guess that could be considered smart economically, but part of it is I am lazy and don’t want to leave the house.  But it helps me get creative, I never would have thought to put strawberries and pineapples together, much less make it into lemonade!  Delicious!  So when life gives you strawberries and pineapples…haha, you know the rest.

Let's Juice! Strawberry Lemonade

Drinking fresh juice is a great way to satisfy your sweet tooth without the added sugar.

Since I quit sugar I use juicing as a way to satisfy my sweet tooth.  I have to say though, this recipe isn’t exactly the sweetest.  It is not for the beginner juicer that’s for sure!  So I bet you are thinking it must not be good, well, I LOVE it.  But I love tart things, so if you are not into tart you might need to try something else.  Of course adding a little honey and a little water to this recipe makes it just sweet enough, so if you would like to do that I suggest raw honey!  YUM!  I made this recipe last week and I am finally posting it, it’s 1:02 am.  These pictures are making me want to get out of bed and juice!  I guess I will have to wait till tomorrow though.  Enjoy!
