3 Free Favorites in NYC

by SayHelloBlog, in category Travel, United States

I know most people that go to NYC for the first (or second time) have Central Park on their list of things to do. I am no different than anyone else in that respect. I love Central Park. I love the grandness of it. I love the idea that some people may just live by it, wake up and after their morning coffee they take a jog through the park to energize their day. It’s just beautiful. So walking through Central Park with my camera, naturally is one of my favorites, right at the top. I am in fact a huge nature girl though, so this might not be most peoples’ favorite. This past trip I was there at the NYC Marathon. I was a little overwhelmed with how calm it was watching people finish up the marathon, but also overwhelmed with the droves of people flooding through the park. Did you know that over 50,000 marathon runners finished the race this year? (Well, since it’s 2015 I guess I have to say last year.) That is just amazing to me.

My next favorite is walking around Grand Central Station. I didn’t take a lot of snap shots, but I think the main room is just beautiful. They have a ton of shops though and restaurants inside to keep you busy for an afternoon of browsing.

I really love Bryant park during Christmas time. They have an ice skating rink that actually sparkles with all the lights of the city above it. The shops are perfect for Christmas gifts, or just gifts in general. (Handmade soap and gourmet hot chocolate for myself? Ok!) Did I mention the food? I had apple cider and a chicken spinach crepe that perfectly completed my evening. If it’s not Christmas time check out the free shows they do during the summer (and possibly at other times?). I saw shows from broadway perform some of their songs last year, it was incredible, and free! Be sure to google free events in NYC. There is always something going on in that beautiful city that never stops.

Bicycling in Brugge, Belgium

by SayHelloBlog, in category Europe, Travel

I know I have done 2 posts on Brugge already. I only got to spend a day there, but by far it was one of my favorites (right up there with Amsterdam). This little town has so much charm. I could see myself spending a whole lazy week there, riding my bicycle around, eating waffles in the afternoon at little cafes. It’s a great town with unique food, beer, and quiet little streets.

You do not have to be a cycling expert to bicycle through the town. It’s just perfect for everyone and no need to stress. I definitely think those visiting Europe should not miss this town. That being said I’ll let the photos say the rest.

Marie’s House Brugge, Belgium

by SayHelloBlog, in category Europe, Travel

My favorite part of traveling is exploring and discovering. Hands down my favorite place we discovered while traveling Europe as far as atmosphere was Marie’s House. I had been craving a real authentic Belgian Waffle.

I absolutely loved the inside of Marie’s House. Who doesn’t love a little bit of vintage and quaintness? But on a lovely day, you don’t sit inside, you sit outside. I am not gonna lie, the garden in the back was the perfect place to spend the afternoon. Belgian waffles and Belgian beer? Yes please!

If you get the chance to visit Brugge, you have to have a lazy afternoon at Marie’s House. Also try the chocolate tea. I am not sure beer, waffles, and tea mix. But if you have the tea with the waffle, then have a beer for desert, it sort of works perfectly!

A Little Bit of Brussels

by SayHelloBlog, in category Europe, Travel

brussels05 copy brussels08

I have a secret obsession, well, I guess it’s not really a secret, except that no one really knows about it but me, and if you keep on reading you as well. I love Bloglovin’. I do! I read it everyday, I love seeing what random strangers around the world are up to in the blogosphere. So on my New Years day, I am bringing in 2015 by stalking all those beautiful blogs, like Dust Jacket, the Fresh Exchange, and Love and Lemons. What am I looking for? Honestly I am reading to be inspired. I love looking at other lives and taking a little bit of what they’ve learned and applying it to my own life. It makes me feel alive. Maybe that is silly, that random strangers can be a part of your life in some way, small that it is. But reading about people and their lives, whether it’s they have finally found that one recipe that works, or they went on a trip that changed their life, or they just woke up and beautifully photographed their morning routine, it is inspiring. It is because we are all human, and we are all looking for something in someone else that says, hey, you can do this! You can wake up and be content, you may have a crazy schedule, an overwhelming job, or you may be up against all odds, but I am the same and my life is ok.

brussels07 copy

So this summer I traveled to Europe. This is a small snap shot of Brussels and the great time we had. It took some guts to get up and go to Europe, because I hadn’t planned to travel with anyone and had no plans. But it worked out so that I was actually never alone on my traveling solo. I am not sure what I was thinking when I planned for 6 weeks of travel. If I had thought too much about how expensive it would be, I might not have gone. I was filled with a lot of what ifs, and how long will I be paying for this trip? But it happened! I am glad it did because the experience was worth it all. So when in doubt, just go. It will be worth it, you will have a life time experience, and it’s just money. Money you can get back…but you can’t buy back time. So make it count friends. Here’s to not playing it safe in 2015 and taking even more chances! Happy New Year!

Fairy Tales and Castles

by SayHelloBlog, in category Europe, Photography, Travel

Today Let’s go to Sintra, Portugal. It’s not every day you get to walk the halls of a palace, or take photos from the top of a castle. I promise you won’t be disappointed with the view!

sintrapalace15

Wanderlust. What is it about that word that sounds so dreamy? When I hear the word wanderlust, my head is overwhelmed with pictures of tall pines, blue oceans, purple sunsets, exotic animals, and markets that boast a rainbow of colors. I could sit for hours drooling over the photos on Pinterest, and you would think why go visit the places, if you can see them on the internet. Oh but how wrong that is! You do need to go! You need to see, smell, taste, and feel all those things that inhabit the word wanderlust.

I spent a small fortune traveling in Europe this past summer, and I know not everyone can afford another country, but even traveling close to home can create a sense of adventure and get you out of everyday humdrum.

If you happen to have the resources to go somewhere like Europe, I highly recommend Portugal. It’s slightly more affordable than places like France and Germany. The amazing sites and the down to earth people are appealing in a such a way that I am sad it’s not on everyone’s bucket list.

Song Writing Tips: Be Inspired

by SayHelloBlog, in category Song Writing

Follow my blog with BloglovinIMG_0342

Years ago I picked up my new issue of Domino. I was excited because Zooey Deschanel was on the cover. If you don’t know who she is (I mean of course you know who she is), well…think New Girl, She and Him, and Elf. She is also a songwriter. The article on Zooey focused on her home. One room in particular stood out, her song writing room. I basically drooled over it for months and imagined having my own space like that to create beautiful music….fast forward 4 or 5 years, and I don’t have a space to create music at all. I love where I live, I have a wonderful roommate, but no space to write music. You need an inspiring place, or at least I do. So whether it be in your home or someone else’s find the space to do it.

I am going to challenge myself to find a place to write in 2015, even if it means renting a small studio. I live in Dallas, shouldn’t be too hard right? Actually I’ve been looking for months and only found dead ends, so I might have to get creative, like a storage unit? This has actually crossed my mind. Public places are not really great for writing songs, since I need to have a place I feel comfortable singing about things that well…like a diary only need to be heard by me. Until I think I can turn a song into something beneficial for others to hear, and not too embarrassing (like that last break up) I want to keep it to myself.

Which gets me to my first tip for song writers just starting out:

1. Bare your soul.

Maybe that sounds a little dramatic…but learning to do this in songs can be therapeutic. Have something personal that you want to get out in the open. Don’t imagine yourself singing to a crowd of people…let song writing be just you baring your soul to, well…you. Can you write songs about just having a nice day? Yes of course. And those can be great, but if then you have to ask yourself why you want to write songs. For me it’s all about getting what’s been subconsciously deep inside…well…out there. Some days I might just write a song about needing more time to sleep in, which I have, but it came from a place of longing, even though it was light hearted and fun.

Anyone can write a song, I don’t care if you have musical talent or not, you have experiences, you have something to share, and you can do it in a song. Now, if you have little musical ability than yeah, your songs might take more effort, and if you can’t sing, maybe someone else will need to sing them. But songs don’t have to be written for a crowd, they can be written just for the release that comes from writing them.

2. Make a list of songs that inspire you.

So you want to write a song and you aren’t sure where to start. Make a list of songs that inspire you, and well…listen to them. Try to notice what about the song makes you want to listen to it. Is it something in the singer’s lyrics that touches you? Is it something in the melody that catches you and keeps you singing it all day? If it’s the melody how are you going to create a melody that also is catchy? Just something to think about.

3. Play your instrument and sing it out.

Sit down with your guitar, piano, or ukelele. (I love my ukelele, I can bring it anywhere because its so small and cute). Play a couple of chords you like over and over and let what ever melody that comes to you sing it out. If you are having writers block pick some chords from a song you know or have been practicing (doesn’t have to be your song). Come up with a different melody. Sing it out, close your eyes. Make up words, whatever words come to mind even if they don’t make sense (sometimes I just make up words, they aren’t real, but it helps me come up with a melody).

If you aren’t a singer play with a melody, add a few notes at a time that sound good. Play around with it.

IMG_4764

4. Start with a poem.

Sometimes if I am not in the mood to sing, I might go to a coffee shop and write down my feelings. I try to put it in a poem. I have folders of poems I have written. If I want to write a song and start with a poem I’ll grab my folder look through them and whatever lyrics jump out at me I’ll sit down with at the piano and try to see if a melody comes. I don’t always start with a poem. Most of the time I have the melody first and then bring the lyrics in. But chances are with as many poems I have, I can usually find lyrics that fit a melody I’ve just come up with and I just edit till I like it.

5. You aren’t professional, who cares?

Why does doing something in our culture have to end with being a professional? Chances are if you haven’t written a song before, you aren’t going to start even if you want to, why do it? You argue that you aren’t going to play for someone or potentially make money at it. But that isn’t a reason to start it anyway. Do it because it is something beautiful. Do it because of the amazing results of peace that come with it. Do it for yourself. You may not have that much time to start song writing, but believe me, once you start you will become addicted. It’s one of my most treasured times I have to spend with myself. Writing with others is crazy rewarding too. It doesn’t have to be anything other than a hobby, but if you keep it up you never know what the hobby could turn into. But, it should always be about enjoying it, writing music under stress sucks the life out of you…as I have experience before.

6. Pick up an instrument, even if you’ve never learned one.

If you don’t know an instrument then you should pick one up, because instruments make song writing that much easier and fun. A simple cheap and inexpensive instrument that is great and simple for song writing is a ukelele. It’s small, most chords are just two fingers. If you just learn three chords on the ukelele you can write 100s of songs. Youtube has tons of ukelele tutorials. So lessons are free.

I hope some of these have helped inspire you to pick up a new hobby. Chances are if you enjoy listening to music, you will absolutely fall in love with creating it. Have a wonderful weekend!

Switching from WordPress.com to WordPress.org

by SayHelloBlog, in category Uncategorized

wptowp

I’ve been with wordpress.com for little over a year. I love blogging with WordPress. I do wish there was a way to add fancy buttons, I haven’t found one yet, but for the most part I like everything else about it. I recently went through deciding whether to switch to Typepad (recommended by A Beautiful Mess, one of my favorite blogs), or stick with WordPress and just move to .org. I am still not sure if I made the right decision, sometimes my site doesn’t load as fast as I want it to. Not sure what I am doing wrong yet, but I am hoping to clear that up soon.

The process from moving from wordpress.com to wordpress.org for me was fairly simple but was a few hours work. I had to decide on a hosting site. I chose Go Daddy because of the Managed WordPress hosting. One thing that didn’t sound appealing about switching to .org was needing to know about updating the site, making sure it wasn’t attacked by web cowboys and aliens. Yeah, I have no idea really what I would have been getting into (sounded like aliens to me). I did a little bit of research and it seemed like too much of a hassle to have your own website and be in charge of managing the site. I just really want to blog. So with Go Daddy I feel like I can do that.

I bought the Meadowbrook template from Angie Makes that is beautiful. Angie Makes reminds me of a lovely pastry shop full of delicious designs, they are so pretty I almost expect to see them selling cupcakes. I love their designs. I do. I am working on taking the template I bought and turning it into something that is my style (whatever that is, still figuring it out). A Beautiful Mess has a blog design class that I am trying to finish. Hopefully it will help me come up with a style and design that fits my “brand”.

Finally, after buying my domain through Go Daddy, uploading my template from Angie Makes, I had to move my content from wordpress.com to wordpress.org. I wasn’t able to do this with Go Daddy, because I got in a hurry. There is a way to do it, but I now I’ve forgotten. So if you go through Go Daddy remember to ask them how to move the site, and they have great customer service and can probably help you do it.

I moved my site with the WordPress plugin WP advanced importer. The one thing I didn’t like about that is I believe all my photos in my posts are just links back to my old site. Which right now is fine because it works, but I eventually want to move all my photos to my new site, but I haven’t looked at how to do that. Of course how I have it now is fine, but I think that if I were to delete my old wordpres.com site then I wouldn’t have my photos from my old blog posts. Hope that makes sense. If anyone out there has some suggestions I would love for you to comment!

I immediately downloaded the WP JetPack which allows you to do pretty much everything WP.com does, like check stats.

The last thing I’ve done is set up Google Adsense and Analytics. Which makes me feel pretty official. Again, not really sure how it all works. It’s still new to me, but I will be researching it and I’ll update you on what I find out. Hope this is maybe a little bit helpful for someone out there!
